Retrofit Sunvisor Lights to Renault Megane MK3
First you need to check if you have the correct sun visors, from my research it seems that some cars have them installed already even if you don’t have the lights, my passenger side one was already correct but the drivers side was not. You can identify this quite easily by removing the sunvisor from the headlining and looking for these two pins here.
Then you need the sunvisor lights and loom, the loom looks complicated but we won’t actually be using it all, unless you want to pull out the whole headliner and A pillars, go for it, but I don’t. We’ll just be cuttung off the 4 plugs we need and getting power from the dome light. The lights are used on more than just the Megane, they’re also in the Scenic, and Laguna from what I’ve seen, maybe even the Clio too.
I want this loom to be removable, so we’re going to use these plugs which are readily available from eBay or Amazon, or your local hardware store.
There are a few ways you could connect this, we just need power and ground, you could solder this directly to the dome power and ground pads, or splice it into the loom going to it, either way is fine.
Here’s the loom we’ve made, its 5 plugs in total. 2 go to each sun visor to tell the lights when to turn on and off, 2 go to the lights and then the other one is to connect this to our existing loom in the headliner where we’re getting our power from.
It’s pretty simple, power comes from the dome light straight to the light, the ground wire runs through the sunvisor plug, that way it’s only grounded when the sunvisor mirror is open, allowing the light to get power.
You need to use pins 2 and 4 for the power off of the dome light. Pin 2 always gets 12v when the ignition is on, pin 4 is ground. If you use pin 1 or 3 the lights will work, but only when the dome light is on.
We’ve done most of the work now, all that’s left is to fit it all which requires cutting a small hole in the headlining for our new light, you can see the hole I cut below. Below is a picture of a Megane 3 with no headliner in, so you see the holes where the sunvisor mounts to and also the hole for the wiring the sunvisor light will come through, so although it doesn’t really matte where you put it; as the light just mounts to the headliner and not the roof of the car, I would aim for around there. I would trace around the light on a bit of paper and then cut that paper smaller than the tracing by about 5mm all the way around and then trace around that paper on the headliner. I’d use a new stanley blade so it’s sharp and go slowly.
Now all there is to do is fit it all, I’d start with the loom, get it all into position and dangle the plugs through the holes needed, plug it into where ever you wired our 2 pin plug in, then plug in the light and clip it into place. Plug in the sunvisor and clip that back into place, and give it all a test by opening the sunvisor mirror cover.
